KKE initiative on Palestine. D.Koutsoumbas sent a letter to the presidents of the opposition parliamentary groups

On Thursday 22 May, in light of the dramatic developments experienced by the Palestinian people due to the brutality of the Israeli state, Dimitris Koutsoumbas, the GS of the CC and President of the KKE Parliamentary Group, sent a letter to the leaders of the opposition parliamentary groups (excluding the fascists of the ‘Spartans’ party). Despite the different positions held by political parties, the letter was sent based on the unanimous decision of the Greek Parliament in 2015 to recognize the Palestinian state.
In his letter, D. Koutsoumbas proposed the drafting of a statement to be addressed to the Greek government, so that, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, it should take relevant initiatives concerning military operations in Gaza, humanitarian channels, the condemnation of Israel's crimes and the recognition of the Palestinian state.
The KKE's initiative was welcomed by SYRIZA president Socrates Famellos, the New Left president Alexis Charitsis and the Course of FreedompresidentZoiKonstantopoulou.
PASOK responded negatively (obviously not wishing to disrupt its strategic alliance with the murderous state of Israel) and said it would take initiatives with the European social democratic parties. The Greek Solution and Victory parties also responded negatively.
The joint statement, which was drafted at the initiative of the KKE, reads as follows:
“The Palestinian people are going through terrible times. The Israeli state and government are intensifying their military operations in the Gaza Strip with the stated aim of clearing it of the Palestinian population. In this context, they are even refusing to provide humanitarian aid, bringing the Palestinian people face to face with the threat of starvation. The partial or total extermination of a population constitutes genocide.
The UN has warned that thousands of babies in Gaza are at risk of dying from malnutrition and lack of medicine. A real genocide is unfolding before the eyes of the entire world in Gaza. To date, this has resulted in over 61,000 deaths, 119,000 injuries and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people, the vast majority of whom are civilians.
Acts of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes are being committed on a daily basis on a large scale, in violation of all concepts and provisions of international law, international humanitarian law and international criminal law. This is in stark contrast to the sentiments of the peoples around the world, including the Greek people, who have consistently expressed their solidarity with the Palestinian people. The International Criminal Court, of which Greece is a founding member, has issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu on charges of international crimes.
Given these critical developments, the Greek government has no political, legal or moral right to justify or ultimately support these crimes. As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, it has a duty to take active, urgent and clear initiatives to stop the genocide against the Palestinian people, address the humanitarian crisis and recognize a Palestinian state withinthe 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Through their presidents, the undersigned parliamentary groups are sending a statement to the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, calling on them to take initiatives in the following directions:
- All military operations by the state of Israel in Gaza must cease immediately and a ceasefire must be declared.
- All humanitarian channelsmust be opened immediately to allow aid, water, food, medicine, medical supplies and doctors to be sent to alleviate the famine among the Palestinians.
- The Greek government must explicitly and unequivocally condemn the crimes of the Israeli state against the Palestinian people, workers, volunteers, doctors, nurses, humanitarian organizations and missions trying to deliver aid, and UN humanitarian aid workers.
- The Greek government should stop all military cooperation with the state of Israel.
- The unanimous decision of the Greek Parliament in 2015 should be implemented immediately and the Palestinian state should be recognized within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
- The President of the Palestinian Authority, Mr. Mahmoud Abbas, should be invited, under the responsibility of the President of the Greek Parliament, to address the Greek Parliament and inform the Greek people about the situation in the Gaza Strip and in the Palestinian territories as a whole.”
